Part 1 - How The Bulkhead Project Started.

Welcome to the Pegasus Bulkheads Blog

Pretty much every week we learn something new about the history of Land-Rovers, especially bulkheads!  So we thought we would start a blog and share the love of these fascinating vehicles.

Pegasus have been building bulkheads since 2010.

In June 2019 Pegasus Bulkheads Limited was formed, as a new venture with a private investor, together with Paul and Debbie Halley.

The main reason for going into partnership with a private investor, was mostly down to Pegasus Parts and the demand for bulkheads growing faster than Paul could handle by himself, which led him to have a life-threatening health scare in July 2018.

After spending months finding a factory in the UK, that could make all the parts under the same roof, we decided to start working with one particular factory, because we were impressed with their engineering diversity. Not only will we be able to make Series 2 and 2a bulkheads, but this particular factory will be able to produce all types of bulkheads, at a very competitive price.

The factory is currently building a First Article bulkhead for our approval. Once they have built the First Article, and we are happy with the quality, we envisage there will be much shorter lead times than ever before, if any, as we take stock of all types of Series and Defender models and list them on our website.

How Pegasus Parts Bulkhead Project Started

It was in 2008, that the British economy was in a crisis, which revealed shaky foundations in the banking institutions. There were many high-profile casualties and the UK stock market went through a period of volatility. A huge impact on many big and small businesses was damaging to say the least.

At the beginning of the financial crisis, Pegasus Parts received a letter from the administrators of a well known classic car manufacture, who believed they owed us some money, for parts that we had supplied to them.

They didn't owe us any money, but we did look into the company's background, to see what it was all about - an interesting story in itself.

It reminded us of a similar long-term project and dream, that we had envisaged...

At the time, everyone was attempting to make a 40-year-old bulkhead perform well beyond its design life.

We discovered that hidden corrosion on poorly repaired bulkheads is often found to be a weakness and sometimes the damage and corrosion incurred is simply too great for them to be successfully repaired. Often the corrosion will break through years later and become visible on what appeared to be a new repaired bulkhead.

So we came up with our own solution... to produce new bulkheads with all new metal, initially for Land-Rover Series 2 and 2a models.

After examining many bulkheads of various types and ages, and with our background in manufacturing and production, the bulkhead project was born... It didn't look too difficult to replicate! Mostly flat panels with very few compound curves. Some complexity around the ventilator lid seals, but nothing that looked too challenging....?

Quality is not an act, it's a habit!
